Be on the lookout throughout the City for our unsung hero....Our "new to us" Street Sweeper is out actively cleaning the streets of leaves, debris, and trash. Street sweepers provide a significant environmental benefit by helping prevent debris from entering stormwater systems and eventually discharging into our local waterways. Our sweeper also provides special event cleanup after parades and other largescale events. Next time you see 'em out, make sure to give a little wave to let 'em know that you appreciate their efforts.

Statement of Guidance for Safety During the April 8th, 2024, Solar Eclipse from the City of Metropolis Office of Emergency Management I’d like to welcome you all to the City of Metropolis and thank you for choosing our city to visit and view the Solar eclipse along with our families, friends and community leaders. We hope you have a wonderful time here and will consider visiting our great city again as we host multiple other events throughout the year annually. Below are some safety and informational items to keep in mind while visiting us during this year's eclipse event. Officials from City Hall, Police and Fire Department and Emergency Management are encouraging residents and visitors to practice situational awareness during this upcoming natural phenomenon. We are asking motorists to park in designated parking areas, be mindful of pedestrian traffic as there will likely be many people out walking throughout the city of Metropolis in search of a suitable viewing area. For those that are traveling along our roadways, we kindly ask that you avoid stopping in the middle of the roadways as that will likely cause increased traffic congestion and increase the likelihood of vehicle accidents. We also urge motorists to top off their vehicles fuel tanks if vehicle traffic comes to a standstill as we’re expecting increased amounts of tourists and traffic. There are many side roads in our community that could easily become congested with the amount of increased traffic on Monday morning as visitors arrive and then depart later that evening after the event. For that reason, we ask that visitors stick to the main roads so that first responders and other emergency personnel can respond to any issues as they are received. Our main priorities are that our first responders can safely and efficiently get to the emergencies they are called to. The office of Emergency Management will be in constant contact with state officials at the Illinois Emergency Management Association-Office of Homeland Security should any situation develop, that outside resources may be needed to assist in its mitigation. City officials are confident in our existing infrastructures that they will accommodate any increased amount of civilian and vehicle traffic. Our primary focus during this event will be the safety of our community and its residents and visitors so that we all can safely view the eclipse and then return to our homes, towns and families. We thank you all for visiting the City of Metropolis, and hope that you enjoyed your stay here. Micah Tolbert Metropolis Office of Emergency Management Director.
