YAC will be starting again for the new school year
The Metropolis Police Department is proud to be one of over 200 law enforcement agencies across Illinois participating in the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Drive High. Get a DUI” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns this Labor Day. From Aug. 14 through the early morning hours of Sept. 8, officers will be out in force, focused on stopping impaired driving, enforcing seat belt laws and reducing other dangerous driving behaviors.
“Driving under the influence — whether it’s alcohol, cannabis or any other impairing drug — is not just risky, it’s illegal,” said Chief Harry Masse. “We’ll be patrolling with zero tolerance for impaired driving, because our goal is to protect the people of Metropolis.”
Officers will also be enforcing seat belt, Child Restraint and speed laws as part of the “Click It or Ticket” initiative. Buckling up is the most effective way to prevent serious injury or death in a crash. Everyone in the vehicle — front seat or back — should be properly buckled, every trip.
In addition to alcohol, officers will be on the lookout for drivers impaired by cannabis and other drugs. Messages like “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Drive High. Get a DUI” are part of a statewide education and enforcement effort aimed at saving lives.
“We want our community to enjoy the holiday weekend safely and responsibly,” said Chief Masse. “Plan ahead, use a designated driver, and never get behind the wheel impaired. These decisions save lives.”
This local effort is part of a larger statewide campaign supported by the Illinois Department of Transportation, which administers the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns with federal highway safety funds. The initiative is reinforced by IDOT’s “It’s Not a Game” media campaign running across radio, TV and digital platforms to highlight the deadly consequences of impaired driving.

Traffic Alert – Tree Trimming on E. 12th Street
The City of Metropolis will be performing tree trimming maintenance on Tuesday, July 14, beginning at approximately 9:00 a.m., along E. 12th Street near the US Hwy 45 intersection.
To allow our crews to safely complete this work, E. 12th Street will be closed from Barger Drive to the US Hwy 45 intersection for approximately 2–3 hours.
Please plan an alternate route and use caution if traveling in the area. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to maintain the safety and appearance of our community.

Drive smart: Reduce your speed for safer travel
Metropolis, IL– The Metropolis Police Department today announced it is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies to step up enforcement efforts across the state in an effort to reduce speeding. Throughout the month of July, motorists can expect increased patrols looking for speeding, as well as other traffic violations.
“Speeding causes unnecessary danger on our roads,” said Chief Harry Masse. “Speed greatly reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around another vehicle, a hazardous object or an unexpected curve. Speeding drivers put themselves, their passengers and other motorists at tremendous risk.”
During the speeding enforcement blitz, officers will intensify enforcement of posted speed limits.
“Offenders will be stopped and ticketed – especially on our main roadways, where most of our speed-related crashes occur,” said Chief Masse. “Our goal is to save lives.”
